What feels like a way to long winter period, is finally coming to an end, and the long awaited summer with buzzing insects is at the door. In the southern parts of Norway and low coastal areas fishing have been possible for some time. While other parts of Norway is just now seeing the ice cap release its grip on the waters.

But this is the first moment of action on many lakes, as the tiny midge is the first insect to hatch, and the fish rarely passes off an opportunity like that.

So – if you still have not pulled the rod out, this is the moment to do so. Dive into the old gearbox, pull out the tools and your work outfit, and let the first trip of the season be one with hatching midge on spring lakes. Often a week after the ice melts the midge pulls up both trout and arctic char.

The Atna water system woke up from its winter dorm this weekend, and with good weather and a few ice free lakes with rising trout, we were easily drawn to the mountains. And even though the fish was of the smaller type, we felt good about the season being on 700 meters above sea level.
