Holselva river – home of big fish

Out of all the rivers we have in Buskerud county the Holselva river is certainly one of the best, especially for big fish. Tee river is the scene of migrating trout that come out of the Strandafjorden lake. A big shallow nutrient rich lake where the trout grow rapidly.

Out of all the rivers we have in Buskerud county the Holselva river is certainly one of the best, especially for big fish. The river is the scene of migrating trout that come out of the Strandafjorden lake. A big shallow nutrient rich lake where the trout grow rapidly. The migrations start in mid July, the fishing however is better later in the summer. You can have good fishing as early as June, but we recommend the lower parts of the river for that.

Holselva Fly fishing zone

The river is a regulated threshold river and it is approximately 3 km long with a good variation in speed and depth, with many nice pools. The water level and pace varies dramatically throughout the season. The river banks and surrounding nature is mostly leaf and bark threes and some parts have farmed fields. The river are some timers the scene of huge may fly hatches. Present the fly a few meters up stream of the fish and use long leaders. The trout is easily spooked.

Our Fishspot ambassador Jon Erlend Sundnes just came back form the river with these words.

“Hearing rumers of big trout i decided to spend my weekend at the banks of the Holselva river. The autumn can be tricky and conditions can be off with windy cold days. We did however manage to land a good number of fish, both on dry and wet flies. Even with the fishing being below average, the trip was still very nice.  The landowners have really mad a good effort at facilitating the river for fishermen. Good descriptions of the various pools, and a very nice gapahuk (shelter – see picture below).

With sign having been put up at the right places, it was easy to find your way, even for a newbie like myself at this river. I have been here two times this summer and the locals are very welcoming and i have been given good tips on the river. This for sure a river i will be visiting more often. Six thumbs up to the land owners.”
