Stage 10
- Isterfossen
Imagine having an entire month to simply fish… how would you plan it out? Here we provide a bit of inspiration within Fishspots’ hottest areas – Tour de Fishspot 2021.
Isterfossen – rising fish party
At the outlet of lake Isteren the warm summer nights bring hatches that work like a magnet on large fish that typically reside in the big lake.
Both grayling and trout pull down from the lake during the evenings to feast. Grayling are on the hunt for bugs, while trout eat anything, including the grayling. You should definitely have both your dry rod and streamer rod rigged up when you show up to Isterfossen.
Just remember to use thick tippet on your streamer rod. Many an angler has cried when a mega trout has taken off with both their streamer and half of their leader.
There is no limit on the amount of licenses sold here, so if you get unlucky it can be a bit busy here. But luckily, you have loads of other fishing opportunities in every direction.
One big advantage with this watershed, which includes all three of the fly fishing zones, is that the water levels are relatively stabile. The large lake Isteren works as a buffer for both flooding and dry periods.
A boat is an advantage in the entire area, and can be rented at Galten gård.
If you choose to stay at Smithsetra you will be a part of a long lineage of anglers. The Smith brothers from London built Smithsetra in 1892. Setra is now restored and we can’t think of a better place to stay and relax given the caliber of fishing to be found in the area.
During the end of July you will find the large mayfly Ephemera Vulgata here, and this is something that just needs to be experienced.
Equipment
A wading staff, waders, and good boots.
Fly rods in wt 4-6. Use a 6 wt for casting bigger streamers for trout.
PREVIOUS STOPP – Stage 9:
Galthodet – the kingdom of big whitefish.
NEXT STOP: Rena – the last stop
Plan B
You are right in the middle of some of the best fishing in Engerdal. In addition to Galtstrømmen and Isterfossen, you could also take a detour to Femundselva, Tufsingdalen, a variety of mountain lakes with big trout and char, or explore the entirety of Femundsmarka National Park.
