Autumn is a wonderful time when it comes to fishing for grayling, and even though trout are protected this time of year there are still plenty of opportunities for fly fishing. We have a good tip for those who haven’t planned their fall vacation quite yet! We spent week 39 at Galtsjøen targeting grayling, and this time we stayed at the Smith Seter Cabin which is owned by the folks at the Galten Gård Farm. This cabin is located right next to Galthue, which is the beginning of the River Femundselva. This is a perfect starting point for fall grayling fishing!

On the upper end of Lake Galtsjøen you will find a a zone at the inlet called Galtstrømmen. This is a large shallow area with varied currents and plenty of places for fish to lay. Besides being packed with fish there are plenty of good opportunities for wading here.

At the Smith Seter Cabin you will find Galthue, which is a very productive zone at the outlet of the lake. When staying at Smith Seter you will have access to a boat, so the outlet can be fished effectively from both sides.

Galthue offers many perfect fishing spots, and mid stream you will find the main channel which is perfect for both dry flies and for nymphing.

At the Galten Gård Farm you will find several boats available for rent, which open up new opportunities for fishing at Galthue, Galtstrømmen, or throughout the lake for whitefish.

These nice autumn days are enjoyed to the fullest because winter is just around the corner.

The Smith Seter Cabin is a very well kept old log cabin with a long history in fly fishing, and it has been renovated in recent years. Here you can read about the history of the cabin: http://www.smithseter.no

The topic never wanders too far from fly fishing at the Smith Seter Cabin, both at the dinner table in the evenings and around all of the old photographs on the walls. Here we see Stig Brandvold, Mathias Østlie, Elisabeth Eriksen and Henning Foss Watterud toasting to an excellent autumn day.

Fly fishing shouldn’t only be about catching fish, but more importantly with enjoying yourself on your trip. At this time of year the season has come full circle, and finally it’s time to relax a bit. This is a perfect time for soaking in the last fishing opportunities of the season and for enjoying good company along the river banks.
