Shorter days and fatter fish

The sunset over Meløyfloen nature resurve and Einunna . Be aware that in this area it is not allowed to camp or set up a tent.

There’s no way around it. This season too will end, and that’s exactly how it is supposed to be.

But before we give in to the sweet expectations for the next season we have to get as much as we can out of this one, right?

Right. Even though the writing on the wall is impossible to miss as the days get shorter, shadows longer and the nights colder, we would not be without it for any price. It’s not just the fish even though both trout and grayling are at their fittest and most beautiful. Their deep bodies and vibrant markings matched by the intense colors the sky and the vegetation on the bank, signalling the coming fall.

So where would we go to mark the beginning of the end of another season of the most fun you can have standing up?

Here's a few ideas:

Go for the trophy!

Rena, Rena, Rena. If size matters, this is where you want to be. We don’t condone it. We certainly don’t recommend caring so much about size.

And still … the pull. The sheer force. The sheer gravity of it all when a huge brown rolls over your dry fly in slow motion, and then the slow at first but accelerating and totally unstoppable run after the hook sets. All you Captain Ahab’s out there. You know what we’re talking about!

Going high, going late

Going high, late, is a good general tip for fishing trout in Norway. Many alpine lakes are ice-covered until mid July (or later in years with a late spring) and mid August is basically prime time for hatches and surface fishing. Skjåk Public Lands is one of these areas where you can fish well into september in high alpine lakes and rivers, as long as the weather permits.

Hire a private lake ...

The small lake called Rundtjønna is nutrient rich and the trout and arctic charr (stationary variety) show it both in condition and size. This mountain lake in Rendalen can be fished both from the bank and boat, and is managed to carefully preserve the big trout and charr that lives there. Rundtjønna is also an excellent base camp or starting point for those who want to explore other fishing possibilites in the area, like Unsetåa Fly Fishing, Brya river and of course Glomma. Contact the landowner for details. You can rent a cabin from them as well.

... or hire two!

Another opportunity for exclusive fishing is in Aursjøene (or «the trout lakes» in English.) The lakes in Rendalen municipality offers wonderful fishing in beautiful surroundings. The two lakes are completely sheltered and will give you the privacy and solitude many travellers are looking for. The fishing includes the two lakes and a set of traditional log cabins. Average size of trout in the lakes is around 2 lbs. Some kind of watercraft is recommended. You can bring your own or use the provided boats.
