The Selsvollene Fly Fishing zone is located just north of Otta in Gudbrandsdalslågen valley. The area is well-known among Norwegian fly fishermen, but this fly fishing zone is relatively new. The stretch is about 5 km of crystal clear waters with a good stock of grayling and trout.

The Selsvollene stretch is a 5 km long slow flowing section of the 45 km long “zone 5” in river Gudbrandsdalslågen, managed by the ‘Lågen Fiskeelv SA’ river board. This fly only zone has a good stock of trout and grayling, a large part of the grayling population is over 40 cm. The trout have had a good bump up in stock the past few years. The river is easy to wade. There is a “gapahuk” shelter with fire place at the end of the zone. The whole stretch is well marked in the terrain.

The fishing season lasts until late autumn, and the water is crystal clear. The river stretch is easily accessible from the road. There is a maximum size limits for trout and grayling whereby fish over 35 cm must be released. The rest of waters outside the flyfishing zone in “zone 5” also offers fantastic fly fishing, even when only a part of the river is subject to strict fishing rules.

Fishing regulations

  • Fishing season: the whole year (applies to the complete Zone 5)
  • Fly fishing zone: only fly rod with fly is allowed, or fishing with “dup” (spinning rod with a floating casting weight and a fly)
  • All trout has to be released from ice off until Mai 21th
  • Maximum size limit: all fish over 35 cm have to be released immediately
  • Bag limit: maximum two fish per day
  • Children under 16 fish for free
  • Fishing from a boat is not allowed in the fly fishing zone
  • The license for “zone 5” is also valid in the fly fishing zone. There is no separate license for the fly zone.

Other Information

Show respect for farmed fields, do not walk across but walk on the edges. Use marked parking places as much as possible. There is no maximum amount of rods, so pay attention to other fishermen. The easiest access to the water is from the west side of the river.

In addition to fishing in the river, this area has a wonderful and varied selection of fishing opportunities. One can find everything from slow moving or fast-flowing river sections, to fishing in forest ponds and mountain lakes. These fisheries suit everyone, from the dedicated fly fisherman to families and occasional anglers. The most widespread species are trout and grayling, but there are also waters with char and perch for those interested. Most areas are easily accessible, but there are also opportunities for longer trips with tents.
