Kvennan – The fish keep growing

Marius explains that the bag limits established at Kvennan several years ago have given obvious results. He won’t say exactly how big he believes the fish get, but fish over 3-4 kg are there to be found. The truly big fish aren’t as abundant, but they are there. “The fly fishing zone has been established for roughly 15 years, and a maximum size limit has been in effect for 7 years. This has shown clear results and resulted in some seriously big fish”, says Marius. Previously, overfishing was a problem for the trout population in the area, and it has taken some time to build it back up to what it once was.

Grayling are what Kvennan is best known for. Grayling over 45 cm are common here. Marius explains that a standard fly box is all you need to fish here. You don’t really need anything special to entice a grayling to rise, except during some of the hatches later in the fall with small mayflies or midges. Early in the season the stoneflies hatch, and if you want to target big trout then nymphs or streamers are the ticket.

July is one of the best months at Kvennan. “Otherwise I have to say that the fall is extremely beautiful, with frost on the grass, the sun breaking through the fog, and rising grayling”, says Marius.

Guiding and Corona

Marius works as a fishing guide and explains that the 2020 season was catastrophic on the business end. This might not come as a surprise, customers from all over the world had booked with Marius, but were forced to cancel due to travel restrictions. However, we would highly recommend that Norwegians book a guided day on the river. It isn’t only fly fisherman from other countries that can learn a thing or two from a guide. Not only is Marius Tollan a fun guy to spend a day with, he is also very good at accommodating anglers of all skill levels. It can certainly be advantageous with a guide who knows the river like the back of their hand, both for new beginners and the hardcore angler.
