Fresh from Fishspot week 29

It's been a time of warm and dry weather and naturally tough fishing condition. Instead of recapping the sad conditions and adding to the the frustrating feeling many are bound to be sitting with, we serve you a series of pictures and the predictions for next week.

It’s been a time of warm and dry weather and naturally tough fishing condition. Instead of recapping the sad conditions and adding to the the frustrating feeling many are bound to be sitting with, we serve you a series of pictures and the predictions for next week.

With conditions like we have for a while, the best bet have been the mountainous lakes or big rivers like the Rena river. But now time are changing with heavy and welcomed rain to fill up rivers and cooling temperatures. We predict good conditions this and the following week.

In the Rena river, fishing guide Lars B Johansen tells us that the river has not been very effected by the dry spell: Det er litt lite vann du tror på bra klekking med det site vannfallet, døgnfluer på dagen og vår-fluer på kvelden. Det er korte perioder med svømmepuppe på natta fra 00:00 – 02:00. Nymfe fisket har vært meget bra den siste uken.

In Sel Municipality, Gudbrandsdalslågen river, in the Selsvollene section, lokal guide Øystein Solstad have this prediction: “I think we will have much better conditions with good hatches. It is also soon time for second generation mayflies. The rainfall we have had over the past two days have done wonders for the hatching and it has been crazy in the moment just after rain. However this has not yet effected the water level which is still low, but with the rainy forecast it should come good soon. The mountain lake fishing is very good.”

I Folldal and the Grimsa river Bjørnar Hansen have good hopes for the area: “We had a rainfall this weekend and the water level of the Grimsa river rose up to 10 cubic, which is almost at the normal level. I have had good reports on the fishing the past two days. We have seen the last of the biggest mayflies but smaller mayflies like the Baetis Rhodani will keep on hatching. Tee warm water up to 17 degrees is not good as it makes the trout move to more oxygenated waters in fast streams and waterfalls. The have rain might bring the temperature down. I think the warm and dry weather we have been having will give us a good late summer  with plenty of midge, hawthorn fly and ants. Other than that i would recommend people to hit the mountains.”

In the Trysil river in the Gjerfloen Fly fishing part, Snorre Grønnes are experiencing good fishing: “The fishing have been good, but the temperature has been a little high at 17 degrees Celsius. A huge number of fish are being caught these days. the water level is at 60 cubic/second, a little under normal, but a fine level. The flies on the water is now mostly caddis.”

From the Glomma river and Kvennan Fly Fishing, river keeper Hein Van Aar reports of normal fishing in this slow part of the season on this river : “The river level is now normal for this time of the year, i doubt the rain will rise the river, as you need very heavy rainfall for that to happen. I’m hoping for some more caddis activity this evening. My suggestion, and not many people do this very effective fishing, is streamer fishing for grayling. Use small streamers and swing the over the river.”

From Engerdal municipality and the Femund area, Jan Lillestu can confirm that it is a warm and challenging time of the year: “It’s been warm in Engerdal with high water temperatures (18-19C) in the shallow lakes. Femundsmarka have many lakes and most are shallow. What you need to do is to fish in very high altitudes, at least over 900 meters, or in big lakes and rivers. Rivers like Gløta, Isterfossen and Galtstrømmen with Femundselva can all be good options as they are fed by the colder water in the big Femunden lake. It’s predominantly caddis on the fish menu now, and for those who like whitefish, it’s a good choice to visit Gløten”
