Fishing in Holtålen Wilderness Area
The Holtålen wilderness area offers an array of exciting lakes with opportunities for both trout and char fishing, but you will need to lace up the hiking boots and load up the backpack in order to get there. These lakes are spread across both sides of Gauldalen in different fishing management zones, including Forollhogna National park in the west and Kjøllifjellet and Storskarven in the east. You will find true wilderness fishing here, but the area as a whole is relatively easy to access.
This area lies on rich bedrock which makes very good conditions for a wide variety of prey. The large amount of crustaceans in crystal clear shallow water is the reason why the trout get so big in this area.
Although the terrain is varied, it is easily navigable with a distinct flora and fauna. Consisting primarily of birch forest in the valleys, open pastures in the mountains, and Southern Sami monuments on the plateaus, there are many elements that contribute to the total experience in Holtålen.
Ålen and Haltdalen Mountain Board
The Ålen and Haltdalen Mountain Board provides the fishing opportunities here. The shelters here are open for free use for hikers, and the Ålen and Haltdalen mountain board manages two cabins available for rental, located strategically for both salmon and trout fishing. They also manage some of the fishing in the famous Gaula River.
