The Lifjell Area is a mountain plateau between Seljord, Notodden, and Bø. The terrain is like a miniature version of Jotunheimen, with many nice lakes surrounded by several peaks over 1200 meters.

The Lifjell area is a mountain plateau between Seljord, Notodden and Bø. The high mountain terrain is like a miniature version of Jotunheimen, with many nice lakes surrounded by peaks over 1200 meters. From Lifjell you can see Telemark in Panorama. Many of these lakes are home to large populations of smaller fish, but in some of these lakes you’ll find perfect mountain trout in excellent condition up towards 1 kg.


Lifjell is a mountain area located just northwest of Bø in Telemark. The terrain is easy to hike, and you will find plenty of trails. The area is ideal for those who like to combine fishing and hiking. The area is also well suited to families with children.


Fishing

Throughout Lifjell you’ll find a good variety of both large and small lakes and ponds situated in beautiful mountain terrain. The fish population throughout these lakes varies widely. In several of the lakes you’ll find loads of smaller fish, perfect for kids, and in some of the lakes you’ll find big mountain trout. There are three actors which sell fishing licenses in the area. Seljord Hunting and Fishing Association, Bø Fishing Association, and Lifjell Landowners Association.

Seljord hunting and fishing association

The Seljord hunting and fishing association manages 19 lakes on the west end of Lifjell. The biggest fish can be found in Grantjønn, Store Tjorbutjønn and Homletjønn. Lakes where you will catch the most fish is Vesle Tjorbutjønn, Hønsevassdalen and at Eiungsbu..

Langtjønn, Tritjønn, Blomtjønnan and Tvitjønnan have fish of very good quality. The fish here love flies, spinners and worms. These lakes and ponds are surrounded by beautiful mountain nature. The terrain is easy to hike and you will find endless locations to pitch a tent.

Access

The exit from E-134 is roughly one kilometer east of Seljord when driving on E-134. Turn off at the Grimåsen sign. You’ll find a gravel road leading in to Grunningsdalen. Turn off of this towards Grimåsen and you’ll find a large parking area. DNT (Telemark Tourist Association) has maintained a marked trail at the south end of the parking area towards Hollane. The trail is steep for the first 1.5 km, but from there it is easily hiked in towards Store Tjorbuvann. There are several trails leading to the various peaks in the area from the Grimås parking.

Lifjell Landowner Association

The Lifjell Landowner association manages and administrates fishing in roughly 30 lakes and ponds on at Lifjell in Notodden Municipality. Here you will find lakes such as Sunnstulvatnet, Måvatnet, Gavlesjå and Nystulvatnet in addition to many smaller lakes.

Many lakes and ponds are easily accessible only a short distance from the nearest road. Tjønnstultjønn and Kruvla have very nice fish. Here you will experience gorgeous nature varying from forests to mountains above the treeline.

Access

The most well known access point for hiking and fishing Lifjell on the Notodden side is Myregrav Parking. Myregrav Parking is located roughly a kilometer from the Himingsjå Tourist Cabin.

Bø Fishing Association

The Bø Fishing Association manages fishing in a large number of lakes in varying sizes in Midt Telemark Municipality at Lifjell. .

“The Holmen Area”
At “Holmenområdet” you will find Holmen, which is the largest lake managed by Bø Fishing association. On the map you’ll see Holmen is the largest lake, split into two parts lying at both 989 and 990 meters. Between these two lakes is a small stretch of river called Småholmen. Here you will find good sized trout. You will also find a small shelter in case the weather decides to change abruptly.

Skåråfjell Area
Skåråfjellholmen is the most central lake geographically, and it lies at the top of Glekse. Here you’ll find a trail used by many hiking from Jønnbu to the area near near Øysteinnatten and inwards towards Hollane. Within a short distance from Skåråfjellholmen you’ll find three smaller lakes, Sauetjønn, Snotjønn and Sleivtjønn. They have good populations of trout. It is nice to use Skåråfjellholmen as a base, and take a round to fish the other small lakes in the area.

Klokkesteintjønna and Langetjønn at Nybufjellet
There are trout cruising the shallows at Klokkesteintjønna, but there are also arctic char to be found there. In the old days there were very big fish in Kløkkesteintjønna. The record is a beast of 6 kg, which was caught sometime in the 1920’s. In Langetjønn there is rich insect life and limited spawning, which means that the fish there get big and are of very high quality.

Access

Drive to the parking area at Jønnebu. From here you’ll find a marked trail to the lakes at Skåråfjell. The trail leads through a cabin development, up Klintokleiva and up Glekse. An alternative route is to park at Røytejuvbekken near Ormåsen. From here you’ll find a trail to the Holmen area, Røksbufjellet, and Langtjønn.
