Hunnselva has been known as one of the best trout streams in Northern Europe, and has a long history of large trout. Hunnselva above Raufoss has great trout fishing, and in recent years the larger lake run trout from Mjøsa have started to make a comeback.

Hunnselva is the second largest tributary to Mjøsa, with a drainage area that stretches from Lygna in the south to Gjøvik and Vardal in the north. This is one of few rivers in Norway that runs north. Inflow of dark nutrient rich water from marshes and forest lakes in the west, and from calcium rich brooks and streams in the east give the river a very good overall water quality.

In  1993 there were trout fry found in Gjøvik Center, and it is suspected that Mjøsa trout had found their way upstream to spawn in Hunnselva. For the first time in roughly 100 years! In addition to trout, there are plenty of other species found in Hunnselva, including eurasian minnow, whitefish, perch, common rudd, crucian carp, pike, grayling, roach, and vedderbuk.

Multiple species of mayfly can be found here, including the famed Baetis Rhodani, Baetis Scambus, Heptagenia Sulphurea, and Ephemera Danica.

The fly fishing zone in Hunnselva is well developed, with a large parking area found at the bottom of the zone. From you will find a well signed trail along the river.
