River Tundra is over 20 km long, and has its source in Breheimen National Park. The most obvious starting point is at Tundradalssætre. There is only trout in the rivers and lakes in Breheimen National Park.
Directions to Tundradalssætre: take road 15 from Bismo and drive for 10 km to the west. 250 meters before Dønfoss take the Tundradalsvegen road to the south. This is a toll road. Drive 9.3 km by Tundradalsvegen, park at Tundradalssætre. At Tundradalssætre there is a bridge over the river, here starts an unmarked but obvious trail on the north side of the river into the Tundradalen valley to Grønstorrbu. It is 8 km from Tundradalssætre to Grønstorrbu in relatively easy terrain without much climbing. The cabin can be rent from Skjåk Almenning.
At Grønstorrbu is a suspension bridge which will allow you to choose sides further up into the valley. The river is influensed by glaciers in Breheimen as far inland as Ytre Gjelåe. During hot periods in summer, the water therefore can be strongly coloured. Further up the valley, the river is crystal clear, and the further inland you go, the better the fishing gets.
Far into the valley in Tundradalbotnen there are two smaller lakes, Tundradalstjønnin, also holding nice trout. Starting from Grønstorrbu there are several good fishing lakes in northern and western directions. Trout is stocked in almost all waters in Skjåk, since there is little or no natural recruitment in waters over 1300 meters altitude.
The Tundra river can be fished from June onward. Water that is over 1400 m in Breheimen is usually not ice-free before July.
