We write this in August, which tends to be a time for excellent fly-fishing in Rena River. Typically there are loads of caddis hatching, and you can experience extreme periods of rising during the evenings. You will also find plenty of mayflies throughout the daytime and the evening. Later during the evenings you will also find trout and grayling taking swimming caddis nymphs, and this is what most anglers look forward to during this time of the season. When this starts to happen the fish come in close to the banks and feast upon larval caddis. If you have some free time this is one of the best times of the year to pay a visit to Renaelva!

Elisabeth and André scout for rises on a nice August afternoon. Hatches can be very localized, so it can pay off to move around and fish several areas during the day.

The Rena River is most well known for its exceptional grayling fishing, and if you are out after truly large grayling this is not a place to overlook. Here is Andre Brun with a river queen.

Rena is also known for its fin trout fishing, as well as for the large average size of trout. Here is Elisabeth with a nice example. The rich insect life in Rena tends to keep the fish very active.

A large whitefish also fell victim to the caddis larvae.

Rena Fiskecamp is the go to meeting place for the river’s fly fishermen and women. Here you will find plenty of available rooms for rent, as well as a café where you can find a warm meal, a cold beer, and plenty of fly-fishing talk. You will also find a little fly shop aside the restaurant with all of the essentials.

The evenings are typically used sharing the days fishing stories, tips, and flies over drinks. This is the best way to meet your fishing friends! Pictured: Elisabeth Eriksen, André Brun, Mathias Østlie, Markus Hoffmann and Jon Erlend Sundnes.

During the trip Elisabeth managed to catch here personal best grayling, a beautiful example of 1.2 kilos. Renaelva is the place to be if you are after truly incredible hatches and large fish. The river can be a bit windy, but if you are here on the right day with still and warm weather you will likely have an experience of a lifetime.
