Hardangervidda via mountain bike is an journey you simply must experience! Follow the old trade routes from eastern to western Norway through the unique high mountain plateau that is Hardangervidda National Park. The Upper Numedal Mountain Board recommends the bike routes with the option for cabin accommodations in the eastern portion of the park. Combine an active mountain vacation with fishing for fat feisty mountain brown trout!

If you are up for a real challenge you can ride a bike from ”Solheimstulen”. An old road leads the way to Lågaros and a public cabin at Vegarhovd. On the way up you can stop and relax at the Drammen and Omegn cabin ”Ulvalilægeret” or at the stone cabin ”Bakkehytta”, which is an old stone cabin in good condition surrounded by excellent fishing water. Not to far from here you will find ”Feitfisktjønn” (Fat Fish Lake) with the public cabin ”Dyrebu” which is always open.

When you have ridden your bike roughly 30 km, you will come to Ovre Numedal Nature Reserve. Here you will find over 50 lakes in addition to running water in Geitvassdalen. If you would like to take a detour from here we recommend ”Muran”, a large stone cabin located besides Geitvatnet. Or, you can contact ”Fjellstyret” (Board of public lands) to get ahold of the key to ”Jegerbu” (hunter cabin).

A bit farther in the road becomes more rocky, but isn’t a problem for the experienced cyclist. The end of the road can be found 45 km in at the cabin ”Vegarhovd”.

We don’t recommend long bike rides with a heavy backpack. Pack as lightly as possible. Bike bags are recommended, and a good mountainbike with shocks and wide tires is optimal here. If you are in excellent shape it is possible to cylce the entire way in within a day, and being that the way back is primarily downhill you can expect to use less time on the return.

At the end of the trail it is possible to stay at the ”Lågaros” cabin run by DNT-Oslo, or go to ”Råstugu”, a public stone cabin ideally located on the banks of Bjornefjorden.
